Jerrauld Charles Corey “Jay” Jones is the Democratic nominee for Attorney General in Virginia. In 2022, when he was already in his early thirties, Jay Jones sent text messages to a Republican legislative colleague about his desire to shoot Todd Gilbert, another Republican colleague, as well as his children. After then-Delegate Carrie Coyner objected to these messages, Jones called her to repeat out loud what he had said about “pain” being necessary for people to change, then repeated the point again in another text message. He pushed it. On a Republican.
Of all the details in the Jay Jones story, this is the one that boggles my mind. He thought he could get away with describing his fantasy political violence to the opposition over and over again in detail. Either Jay Jones has incredibly poor judgment and impulse control, or he is a calculated terrorist. Of course, Jay Jones did not threaten to kill anyone. He just fantasized at length about killing a certain class of people. Out loud, and in writing, to one of those people. Because he hates those people, his political enemies, so very, very much.
His hatred is genocidal, for it extends to his enemy’s children, too. Jones seems to think that is how fascism gets transmitted between the generations, so he qualifies as a genocidal hatemonger. Someone alert the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Jones was also convicted of reckless driving the same year. According to court records, he was going 116 m.p.h. on a 70 m.p.h. interstate highway. Worse, his penitent ‘community service’ time was a fraud on the court because a political action committee is not a community service organization. If elected in deeply-blue Virginia — and he might be, for no state Democrat can bring themselves to condemn Jones, much less disown him — Jay Jones cannot be trusted to care about justice for any Virginian whose politics he finds disagreeable. He can however be trusted to take care of himself, his friends, and anyone on his side of the political aisle the same way he took care of himself.
This is what we mean by ‘tribal politics’. Jones is leading his opponent by just one point, a margin so narrow that no Democrat is able to condemn his record for fear of being seen as the traitor.
In his first attempt at damage control, Jones named Donald Trump twice in his statement, but did not apologize to Todd Gilbert or his family at all. The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee also redoubled their endorsement, naming Jones’s opponent Jason Miyares twice, but not mentioning Todd Gilbert even once. Democrats are not apologizing because they are not sorry. Jay Jones is unable to apologize properly because he is not sorry. He genuinely wants Republicans afraid for their lives because that is easier than winning people over with his personality or his ideas.
He is in this sense the perfect Democrat, all too eager for the bloody civil war that he imagines he would win, whereupon he would install every unpopular agenda item on the progressive wish-list, achieving the utopian dreams of the left. Jay Jones does not have mental illness for an excuse, but he does suffer from derangement. He knows exactly what he stands to lose in the ongoing decline of the Democratic Party and the disappearance of its new slave classes.
