Contrary to his insistent assertions that he had maintained “an absolute wall” between his vice presidency and his family’s business interests, Joe Biden used email accounts in the names of “Robin Ware, Robert L. Peters, and JRB Ware” to discuss business matters with his son Hunter.
“The National Archives and Records Administration [NARA] has admitted that it is in possession of nearly 5,400 emails, electronic records and documents that potentially show President Biden using a pseudonym during his vice presidency,” the New York Post reported on Monday.
A nonprofit watchdog organization, Southeastern Legal Foundation, submitted the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to NARA in June 2022 that resulted in the disclosure.
“We have performed a search of our collection for Vice Presidential records related to your request and have identified approximately 5,138 email messages, 25 electronic files and 200 pages of potentially responsive records that must be processed in order to respond to your request,” NARA archivist Stephannie Oriabure wrote in the official response letter.
According to the report, John Flynn, an aide to then-vice president Biden, also copied Hunter “on 10 emails containing the elder Biden’s daily schedule between May 18 and June 15, 2016.” Clearly, the father and son were coordinating much more than the father wished to acknowledge.
Of course, details of the contents are not forthcoming yet. Southeastern Legal Foundation are still waiting for NARA to finish the tedious work of FOIA response and hand over the actual emails. The response letter is a formality of the process that lets the recipient know roughly how much money they are going to spend on copies of documents at $0.80 per page.
Nor does anything in the report back up the lies of Viktor Shokin, the Ukrainian prosecutor who lost his job in 2016 for ‘investigating’ anticorruption activists instead of pursuing the open investigations into Burisma oligarchs that were on his desk. Shokin was on Fox News last Friday evening to repeat his self-serving lies.
As I wrote on Monday, Shokin’s falsehoods are a quicksand for anyone who tries to construct a corruption case against Joe Biden. Republicans are well-advised to drop this line of attack. It did not work in 2019 and it will never end well for them a second time around.
However, this analysis does not excuse the very self-evident sleaze of Joe Biden, for debunking Shokin’s lies does not make Biden into a truthteller; it merely disambiguates the two liars into discrete actors, allowing us to examine their lies in isolation.
Hunter was running a family ‘business’ that does no real business to speak of. No one can say quite what the Biden family delivered in exchange for all the money showered on them by foreign contacts.
Whereas Donald Trump is the smart sort of crook who never writes anything down — a key reason why he survived impeachment while in office — Biden has continued the new tradition of Democrats with damaging emails.
Now that NARA’s FOIA response to the Southeastern Legal Foundation has demolished all pretenses that the Bidens maintained any sort of ‘Chinese wall’ between them, we are only waiting to find out how bad the damage will be. Democrats hoping that this issue will simply go away are in for disappointment.
And they ought to brace themselves for worse to come. If Democrats assume that every negative story about Joe Biden will just implode on its own like the credibility of Tara Reade, they are setting themselves up to fail.
