Jay Jones Is A Ridiculous Person
And Virginia Democrats completely deserve him
Remember Jay Jones, the Virginia Democrat who sent text messages to a Republican colleague in which he fantasized about murdering a political opponent and his children? That was dumb. Really, really dumb. But Virginia Democrats clearly decided that Jay Jones was the right kind of dumb, because they elected him to be attorney general last November.
We know that Virginia Democrats are dumb because they broke state laws trying to gerrymander themselves a 10-1 advantage in US House seats. Jay Jones told the Virginia courts to wait on a decision about the legality of the reapportionment vote until after the votes were in. After Democrats won by a narrow margin, the state supreme court found that state constitution had not changed to accommodate them.
The party of #NoKings has beclowned themselves with proposals to empty and re-pack the court, or override the court, or just ignore the court, that will not save their illegal plebiscite. Jones tried to convince the state supreme court to change their minds and let Democrats go ahead anyway, which the justices predictably declined to do, possibly because managed to misspell “Virginia” and “Senator” in his filing.
Now Jones has asked the United States Supreme Court to intervene against the Virginia supreme court, demonstrating his ignorance of federalism. While he at least used spell check this time, Jones managed to address the wrong court in this filing. If there is justice among the justices, this will be rejected on the technicality alone, to his intense embarrassment.
Jay Jones is not a serious person. The Democrats of Virginia are not a serious party. In fact, the national Democratic Party should feel embarrassed by their lawbreaking, the predictable consequences, and the feeble lawyering of a man they bent over backwards to justify keeping on the ballot. It was dumb for Jones to send those text messages. They were disqualifying, not simply because they revealed his character, but because no intelligent lawyer would ever indict himself that way. Virginia Democrats have elected the government they deserve.
