Morning Awful: Right Wing Rape Rationalizations

The more Republicans deny they are the party that hates women, the more they keep hating women. The latest is from Idaho, where the state’s new abortion ultrasound bill passed the senate:

In his closing debate in favor of SB 1387, Sen. Chuck Winder, R-Boise, said, “This bill does not require a trans-vaginal exam. … It leaves that up to the patient and the physician to make that determination.” He said, “Rape and incest was used as a reason to oppose this. I would hope that when a woman goes in to a physician with a rape issue, that physician will indeed ask her about perhaps her marriage, was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage or was it truly caused by a rape. I assume that’s part of the counseling that goes on.”

First, Winder is being extremely disingenuous to claim that a transvaginal ultrasound will be a “choice.” The bill requires an ultrasound; there are no choices in how to conduct an ultrasound before ten weeks’ gestation — the doctor must insert the probe. Second, Winder seems to assume that all rape victims are married to their rapists, or that only married women get raped, and that rape victims are probably lying.

What he really wants to say is: sluts who get knocked up deserve to be raped by the state, and when a woman cries “rape” she is really just a slut. And I am not being unfair here, because right wing activists now fighting renewal of the Violence Against Women Act have been saying things exactly like that for years.
