This is going too far for me. It really jumps the shark. Cynthia McKinney should spend a little time watching the programming on Libyan state TV; the official culture is incredibly repressed, and offers no true free discussion.
Cynthia McKinney crosses a line — “conduct or language inciting rebellion against the authority of a state,” the definition of sedition — by saying “the government of the United States no longer represents the interests of the American people.” But I doubt she will face any consequences, and I really would rather not see her develop a cult of personal martyrdom. I should expect this will make her a darling on the fringes of the left, but I maintain that Libya is a war of oligarchy in collapse. Moreover, the war in Libya was eventual on climate change and resource scarcity, issues that scientists and journalists of all description have predicted we would see in the age of peak oil and rampant population growth.
McKinney is not doing the Libyan people any favors. Nor is she providing a propaganda coup for Ghadafi. That he still maintains his illusions of legitimacy, refusing to give in to what is obviously a popular rebellion, means nothing to her. The war in Libya is native, dividing on fault lines Ghadafi has played on for decades; this is his reckoning. We are just helping. One may argue that war is not doing Libyans any favors; I say let’s ask the Libyans, who don’t seem interested in giving up the fight yet.
