Morning Awful: Cancelled Streetcar

Is there anyone left out there believing that gas prices will ever go down? From the AP:

On Sunday, the Empire State became the sixth state to top $4 for the average price of a gallon of gas, joining Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii and Illinois, according to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge. The average price of gas also rose to more than $4 per gallon in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.

The next states to join the list could be Michigan, which has gas for $3.95 per gallon on average, and Indiana, where the average price is $3.94. Nevada, Washington and Wisconsin are close behind.

I’m the first to say that America needs gasoline to be more expensive. In the age of peak oil, it’s the “free market” solution to propel innovation and change. But a tide of teapublicans is hell-bent on  preventing any changes, leaving America completely unprepared for the consequences. Exhibit A is Cincinnati, Ohio:

The council last year had given the streetcar plan the highest score of any new project statewide, based on projected impact on economic development, congestion reduction, and other factors. Supporters, who hoped the red cars would bring jobs and revitalize neighborhoods, blamed the council’s perceived change of heart on pressure from new Republican Governor John Kasich. (Emphasis mine)

Cancellation has nothing to do with saving money or even ideology. It is wishful thinking at its most idiotic: Ohio is betting that gas will not hit $5 a gallon and add millions of riders to Ohio’s public transit systems. If that was a stock, I’d short-sell it.
