What Does The Party Identification Story Mean?

What happens when a party stops communicating with its public constituency? It drops four points in nationwide polling of party identification. It watches former bastions wash away in a high tea tide. But most of all, that drop indicates just how toxic the Republican brand had become by 2008, and I have a feeling the GOP will spend the next two years reminding us how we felt back then.
