The U.S. Navy has test-fired the most powerful railgun ever. The upside is that rail guns are not as environmentally damaging as depleted uranium; the downside is that they make it incredibly tempting to solve problems by reaching out and touching someone with kinetic energy from a hundred miles away. There is a good side to putting a $600,000 price tag on a Tomahawk missile.
