The Earmark Conundrum

So Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has flip-flopped on earmarks:

Those are special funding requests lawmakers slip into legislation for home-state projects.

Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell says he’s heeding the message voters sent in elections that swept Democrats from power in the House. He says he can’t accuse Democrats of failing to ignore the wishes of the American people and then be guilty of the same thing.

Those aren’t the demands of “the people,” but the tea party. Republicans are now being wagged by the tail they created. Meanwhile, a whole class of freshmen House Republicans is depending on earmarks to justify their reelection in two years. Mo Brooks specifically un-signed the “Contract With America” on this issue; Alabama’s 5th district depends entirely on federal activity.
