Morning Awful

Palin’s “hit list” for November. With people throwing bricks through office windows and cutting gas lines, you’d think she wouldn’t up the ante on eliminationist rhetoric. But then you would be a rational person, which she decidedly isn’t.

Two things: 1) Lawrence O'Donnell made a remark on Countdown the other night about something I thought immediately upon reading about Palin's usage of words like “reload”, and deploying the imagery of cross-hairs in her targeting of Democrats to vote out in November: she's a moose hunter from Alaska! Her arsenal or stockpile of tropes, imagery, symbols and words(!) are limited to begin with, due to her own native ignorance, but the ones she does have are shaped by her background and interests. I know plenty of hunters who use like-minded terminology when they talk about every day things, it's a frame of reference with which they are most familiar. Few people dislike Palin as much as I do, but I doubt this was malicious on her part, just simpleminded stupidity. Which brings me to my next point; 2) even though she's a hick from one of the world's last great frontiers, she still has the moral responsibility as a national figure to be aware of the climate into which she is venturing with her words and images, and to wisely measure them accordingly…but then, you know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe that's just exactly what she did, only she left out the moral responsibility part…
