Obama’s Birth Certificate

It appears that I will spend the next eight years shooting down letter-writers to the Times Daily who perpetuate stupid myths about the president-elect. Tonight I’m working on a reply to this gem. I’ll post it here when it’s done.

Part of this argument about patriarchal lineage goes before the Supreme Court this week (Clarence Thomas was the justice who agreed to hear the petition). Hopefully, the conservative justices on the court, stung by criticism lingering from year 2000, will put this matter to rest.

This will not assuage conspiracy theorists of all shapes and flavors. These people seem to have some kind of obsessive-paranoid-delusional disorder no matter how compelling is the evidence against them.

I don’t see extremism of this type merely in terms of politics. There is some serious psychopathology going on here. From this perspective, the best we can do is make the case that these are fringe groups far from the mainstream and unworthy of serious press attention.
